Despite its relative lack of time on the market compared to more established names such as Norton and Kaspersky, TotalAV is highly recommended as the go-to antivirus solution for those requiring easy-to-use detection and removal tools, but less of the bells and whistles (such as anti-phishing tools) that some of the more established providers offer.
This TotalAV antivirus review will assess how the solution fares against the competition. Should You Choose TotalAV Antivirus Software?
TotalAV is a good option for an antivirus provider, although users will have to purchase the premium version to get even basic detection and removal functionalities. Its strong suit is currently its user interface which we found both intuitive and fast. In addition, the system performed well on our test hardware and the system overhead of both the user area and background processes were minimal.
The product remains in an early stage of development, however, and several important functionalities such as a dedicated firewall manager and parental control options have not yet been implemented. We will update this TotalAV antivirus review as the software continues to upgrade. TotalAV Complete Protection, which covers up to three devices, is currently available at the discounted price of $19.95/year (regular retail price: $99.95). The system supports Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. While this may seem cheap compared to some alternatives (Norton’s Security Deluxe package for example, which covers up to five devices, is priced at $89.99/year) given the fact that some important components have yet to be formally rolled out (including the firewall manager and system optimization tool), we should point out that this is less of a great deal than it might at first seem.
The company does, however, offer a. Considering the fact that it does not currently offer shorter monthly or quarterly subscription options, this is particularly important to give users peace of mind about trying an antivirus that they will probably not have heard about before. In addition, the company offers a free download. TotalAV antivirus Complete Protection program offers both a quick scan and a more thorough system scan, although the latter is only available on the premium version of the product.
The quick scan was relatively quick and after just a few minutes’ scanning some system issues were identified by the program. Free users, however, are forwarded to a payment gateway if they click the ’fix issues’ dialog that is available after the scan has detected potential problems. Not being able to even quarantine viruses is a definite strike against the free version in this TotalAV antivirus review, and means that it is practically useless for those looking to properly secure their systems. Competitor alternatives that do offer this functionality can also be found in abundance. Real time protection is another feature that is only offered on the paid version.
This feature provides 24/7 protection against emerging malware and viruses and is a must for those requiring the most robust protection possible. Because TotalAV remains a relatively new solution, it has not formally tested by any of the independent antivirus testing laboratories so it’s not yet possible to know how well its definitions database stack up to those of competitors. The company is currently licensing the antivirus engine from Avira, however, so its reviews should be indicative of TotalAV’s performance.
Additionally, third-party reviews for popular tech websites have commented favorably on its detection of test viruses with PCMag rating its malware-detection abilities at 7.7/10. For those concerned with privacy, TotalAV operates a proprietary VPN network which is included in the premium package. Information beyond the protocol that is uses; however, remains extremely limited. Those with a serious need for a powerful VPN would therefore be best advised to look for a standalone solution. Finally, the premium version includes a password vault for managing passwords.
It is, however, a static storage area and does not sync across multiple devices. Again, users needing this functionality would be better served by using a dedicated solution such as LastPass that can sync across devices. TotalAV antivirus does not currently include separate firewall protection, parental controls, a system performance optimizer, or backups. As of the time of writing, its website lists these important features as ‘coming soon.’ Users will therefore have to make do with the built-in firewall that comes pre-installed with their system, such as Windows Firewall. While this will ensure adequate protection for most users’ needs, dedicated firewall programs offer more advanced configurations and are a better choice for those that require protection while operating more advanced networking setups such as home port forwarding.
The product scores top marks for its clean and simple user interface which makes accessing the software’s key areas quick and easy. After concluding the system scan, users are easily able to call up specific details to get more information about the detected threats (many of those found on our test machine, however, were normal Internet Explorer cookies). In addition, once the program is running, it can be minimized to the background and called up from the notification area, if required. Both the background process and user area are also extremely light on system resources.
On our test machine, TotalAV antivirus consumed only 2.7 MB of system memory while operating in the background. The WORSE software and customer support i have delt with. TotalAV caused multiple crashes when it did it’s first updated on my 1 week old custom built computer with 7 programs on it, complete system lock-ups forcing me to hard reset my machine when totalAV updated and now when my machine comes out of sleep makes me think that TotalAV could actually damage my hardware, support told me to uninstall windows defender and sent me tutorial on how to remove a program, i replied explaining windows defender is integrated into windows 10 and cant be uninstalled only disabled which it was from the start. They replied with the same email saying uninstall windows defender and sent me tutorial on how to remove a program again.
Facepalm they then told me to start removing programs as other programs are causing the issues. I use Steam, Battle net, spotify and a few benchmark and performance testing programs like aida 64 and msi afterburner, nothing that causes conflict with any other antivirus.

Few weeks later TotalAV picked up a game mod file as a potential threat and put a warning overlay on my screen which is fine, i put the 2 file back on usb stick and removed them from the computer but 2 hours later and i’m still trying to get rid of the overlay so i can see my screen, support tell me to start removing programs and sent me the same tutorial on how to remove a program. At this point they are starting to frustrate and insult me by wasting my time so i ask again how do i get rid of the overlay or who do i contact to refund the broken and unfinished software. They replied with you need to remove conflicting programs and sent me tutorial on how to remove a program because 1 of the 7 programs i use but are not currently not running causes the issues with and only with TotalAV so if you use Steam, Spotify, Battle net, Aida64, MSI Afterburner, CPU-z or Intel Extreme Tuning you may have issues with TotalAV.
I canceled my subscription today and found not only that i can’t get a refund i also lose the 1 year with 2 other devices i had not used which is fine because at this point because i’d pay to not deal with TotalAV or TotalAV support (Lack Off) how they get a rating above 1 stars is beyond me. Pros: Cheap Cons: not intuitive intrusive can cause system instability no support at all reports of TotalAV taking money from people’s bank accounts months to a year after subscription was canceled. Hi, and congratulations on taking the steps to protect yourself and your devices! While the free version may offer good baseline protection, many antivirus providers offer more robust security features with their paid version, including value-added tools like password managers, file shredders, encryption, and more. Real-time protection is a vital tool considering it ensures that your computer is safe at all times, and not just during regularly scheduled scans. If your computer is consistently connected to the web, or even a public Wi-Fi network, real-time protection may be a necessity.
Regular scans may reveal problems, but they won’t detect them when they occur, which means your computer may be in worse trouble than you may imagine. Just finished installing this and am pretty happy so far.
The installation and setup process was a bit convoluted for my liking, but support was pretty helpful and eventually we got everything straightened out. I will say this — Walter is correct that you should read everything carefully before installing.
There are a lot of account features and if you aren’t careful you might end up with something you didn’t expect. It’s true that there’re other programs out there but I feel like for the price this one gives me everything I expected. Ultimately not perfect and a maybe a bit clunky on the execution but still good value here I think.
After downloading and installing their software I can attest that the “free” in Total AV’s claim is “subjective” at best and a downright misconception at worst. Yes, you can “download” their software for free but that’s about all you can do. It will gladly scan your system for ‘supposed’ problems but if you actually want to correct the problems the software supposedly found you must register, create an account and pay a fee before the software will actually do anything useful.
In my case I took advantage of a $2.99 introductory fee only to find out that they ‘automatically’ set up an $8.99 withdrawal from my account for 30 days in advance. The problem was, I don’t remember agreeing to paying $8.99 a month for the “basic” service and was under the assumption that this service was going to be $19.99 per year. My advice is – read everything BEFORE you agree to anything and watch what you’re clicking on before you click on it! According to their “Cancellation Policy” they claim they will refund money spent if you cancel before 30 days has expired. From what I’ve read on other review web sites there are a lot of folks that are having trouble getting refunds for what I consider deceptive business practices as well as misleading and confusing information when you try to navigate their system during the convoluted purchase process but that’s just my opinion based on my own experience.
Buyer beware!!! Pay attention when dealing with any website like this and remember if the deal sounds way too good to be true, it probably is! Also, a few last notes I think are worth mentioning. I noticed when using this software, many of the features they offer can be done by using a similar function contained in most modern versions of the Windows operating system software like cleaning out your trash can or deleting cookies and unnecessary Internet files. You don’t need to pay for a service to do that so it makes this program seem like nothing more than a Windows “overlay” with a few extra features added on.
I realize Windows Defender is not a very comprehensive anti-virus program but I don’t have to pay a monthly fee to use it. I think there are much better options out there for protecting your PC from outside attacks without all the “extra fees” for services you’ll rarely use or only use once.
My experience with Total AV was not what I expected and, depending on if I receive a refund and they don’t continue to charge my account (I deleted the software the day after I installed it) I’ll have to reserve any further judgement about them. Hi friends I need to share my experience about total av pro 2018 I got an offer to get total av pro for just $19, so I bought it. They had some wired type of verification, I had to call their customer services in order to activate my account and I had a vigorous conversation with a customer service agent and they activated my account and now on a sudden they deactivated my account and they sent me a mail saying that my country is not supported. They didn’t mention me this issue when they took the money.
This is a scam company. I don’t care about the money its juss a 19 $ case. But scamming people cannot be accepted. I have the proof with me.
Please don’t buy TOTAL AV they are scammers. Go for any other product and please pass this message to others and put an end to this scam.
